We build structures that stand the test of time.

At Concord Iron Works, our mission is simple: meet our customers’ needs and build structures that stand the test of time.

For more than 50 years, our family-owned and operated company has been built on three core principles: quality, durability, and integrity. These values guide everything we do—from the products we manufacture to the relationships we build with our customers, employees, and partners.

Our employees are the foundation of our success. From the beginning, we have believed in the power of teamwork and collaboration, creating an environment where experience, knowledge, and craftsmanship come together to deliver exceptional results.

We take pride in our work and are committed to providing high-quality steel products while adding value to every project. Jim Gonsalves

Our History

One family. One enduring legacy.

For more than 50 years, Concord Iron Works (CIW) has proudly served customers throughout the Greater Bay Area and Sacramento Valley, building a reputation founded on integrity, exceptional quality, and outstanding customer service.

CIW began in 1972 with the vision and determination of its founder, Jim Gonsalves. After years of experience in steel fabrication and industrial production—often working 36 hours straight without sleep—Jim purchased a small ornamental iron business in Pacheco, California, called Concord Iron Works.

As a devoted husband and father of three, Jim dreamed of building a family-owned and operated business where quality workmanship and customer service came first. That dream quickly became a reality, and Jim never looked back.

By 1981, through Jim’s tireless efforts and the dedication of CIW’s employees, the company had earned a strong reputation for quality and reliability. As the business continued to grow, Jim relocated CIW’s production facility to Benicia, California, expanding into the commercial structural steel market.

By then, all three of Jim’s children had joined the family business. Working alongside their father, they were mentored by his work ethic, leadership, and vision—values that would become the foundation for the generations that followed.

In 1992, as production needs once again outgrew the company’s capacity, CIW moved to a larger facility in Pittsburg, California, where it could better serve its growing customer base.

When Jim unexpectedly passed away in 1994, his children, their families, and a small group of key employees faced the difficult challenge of carrying on his legacy. Guided by Jim’s principles and teachings, and supported by loyal employees and trusted trade partners, they committed themselves to preserving the company he had worked so hard to build.

In December 2019, CIW took another significant step forward by acquiring its current 16-acre campus in Pittsburg. Through careful planning, hard work, and continued investment, the property was transformed into a state-of-the-art fabrication and production facility capable of supporting CIW’s continued growth.

Today, three generations of the Gonsalves family proudly continue Jim’s legacy. CIW remains a family-owned business and a recognized leader in Structural Steel and Miscellaneous Metals, with a commitment to exceptional product quality, consistent service, and on-time delivery.

Since 1980, CIW has successfully completed more than 2,500 projects throughout the Greater Bay Area and Sacramento Valley.

The company Jim founded more than five decades ago continues to be guided by the same principles that built its foundation: quality, integrity, hard work, and a commitment to its customers and employees.

As CIW looks toward the next 50 years, the Gonsalves family remains committed to honoring Jim’s vision while continuing to grow as an industry and community leader.
